Taboo

Accountability is the responsibility to someone or for some activity.

Many times, I see people in the community that feel ashamed of their struggles and refuse to open up to their household heads due to fear of judgement. Many are conscious of their “reputation” and so keeps all of his or her struggles locked up.

But should this be the case?

Jesus calls us to be humble, to confess and to reconcile with Him. Again, and again.

I’m not suggesting to broadcast your faults to the whole world, or that this replaces the sacrament of reconciliation. But putting someone accountable for you and your actions, someone who is morally wise and cares about you, will give you strength. That person, if he/she really cares, would ideally focus on your resolution more than judging you, the same way a priest focuses on the absolution, more than condemning you for your sins. At least in humility, it shows that you are aware and truly sorry of your weakness and that you want to improve and be one with God again.

No matter how taboo it is to talk about certain things, it is better to be humble and admit that no matter how much we know, we are all equally susceptible to falling into temptation - whether we may be aware of it or not (at the moment). Christian or non-Christian. Practicing Catholic or not. We all have our own struggles. That’s the reality and it needs to be acknowledged. Having someone accountable and someone praying for you will help you overcome this sin.

Look around. I think God has already placed those people in your life for that reason because God wants you back that much.

Praise God for this community who offers such loving support.

From the words of Brooke Fraser:

You’ve got your scars and you’ve got your birthmarks
You’ve got Toronto hiding on your hip, honey
You’ve got your secrets
You’ve got your regrets
Darling, we all do
