This phenomenon is known especially to people who have been raised outside of communities with a large population of Asian descent because the visual cortex is not as sensitive to the facial markers that are held in people of unfamiliar races. It is important to recognize that this is not a matter of race, rather this is a matter due to lack of exposure and that lack of exposure from a young age has lead to neural trimming which makes it more difficult to distinguish these minor differences.
This same phenomenon applies to shades of color (ex: languages which have different names for different shades are better able to distinguish), foreign languages (see clicking languages), and facial features of other species.
